It was just yesterday that amid our busy work schedule and project timelines, our team took some time off to get into a very insightful discussion....
It started with - "Is money (salary) more important or Job Satisfaction..."
Everyone jumped into the discussion in a split second saying JOB SATISFACTION....and one person stood there alone saying..."I work for my family...providing them more than enough money to live a satisfying life". We all knew that he also would choose Job Satisfaction over Money...but for the sake of getting a time off from work, we made it our prime motive to make him admit that Job Satisfaction is anyday more important than Money.
View, Opinion, Statements, Examples of exceptional cases, own life experiences filled the 1.5 hr long open air discussions...The small office cubical, with a seating capacity of 6, was now packed with all the colleagues that made up our office. Each had a strong passion to put his/her point forward and be heard...
Everytime an exceptional case was talked about, there were a few who would say - "Exceptions are always there, leave them aside...” but there were others who related to their own life experience or a similar thing they had seen / heard somewhere. But each branch of discussion ended with a sigh and a moment of silence where each took a moment off to sink the thought in or so to say Recharge themselves to go on and on another branch.
Voices rose (to get the point heard), opinions became statement & personal standings, examples became personal feeling....the discussion heated in no time....
As expected some people walked away since noone was seeing their point but retraced their steps back when they realised it was too late to turn away from it and not b a part of it anymore...the whole discussion had grown over them already....
And like always we had some exceptional people, who among all the noise, kept themselves glued to their desks and work on their projects. There was also some who kept walking into the discussion arena...hear thought...go for a stroll anc come back again. These people were mere spectators and didn’t participate.
The whole discussion ended with a big laff...but the heat didn’t die fast....
This was a friendly discussion which everyone welcomed with open arms and mind
Everything that was said wasn’t taken as a personal affront....colleagues still remained a team a united team :o)
For some people the discussion didn’t end there...especially for those who shared the cab to go back home. They continued talking on similar lines even on the way back. The 1 hr long journey didn’t seem that long yesterday.
I had a very funny experience of my own...In my cab we started talking of some technical doubt a colleague of mine had. We started with clearing it, explaining him concept and trying to resolve his doubt so he had a better understanding of the topic...Soon that technical discussion took a jump to attitude of famous / renowned people and before you knew the open forum topic of Money...Job Satisfaction...was back into discussion. I didn’t participate much in the discussion earlier so I started pouring out my thoughts and views about that topic. Before I knew I had added some of my personal life experiences to the discussion and talked endlessly until I had told it all out to my cab mates. hehehehe.
Best part was.....from our afternoon topic I had diversified it to Indian Government...How each one of us can contribute to it...and how I want to b a part of the ppl who want to contribute in development of my country. I am very passionate about being and INDIAN. And I had such a strong urge to tell all my thought to all that even after the cab stopped at my stop....I didnt open the door until I was finished telling everything.
It was nice to think of a million things other than work.....I really had thought that I was incapable of thinking of anything else other than my work related technical topics.
My thought, my knowledge has not become stagnant afterall :o)
And I am still a talker......Who just wants to be heard :o)

U def make urself heard so u dont have to worry abt that ;))
The best way to find job satisfaction is to ask urself do i love this work so much that i would do it for free.. and tht my friend is satisfaction! :))
hmmm...the point is..in our line of work...job satisfaction never lasts for more than 2 weeks at a stretch...so in between ppl just work for the money!! best of both worlds uh? :)
Nice Post. To add to Meera's Idea, another good way to find out whether u have Job satisfaction would be to see that when u get up every morning are u all excited to go to work or u just feel it as a burden u cant escape.
true! one does feel rusted till one day.. thre is a summer shower of an interesting discussion, and the mettle shows beneath the rust... :-)
Well, I am outsider in this discussion but I am keen to know what 'job satisfaction' means? What did you and your friends define it as?
What makes a person stick to his/her job- satisfaction with less salary or just better salary?
In my scheme of things, with my experience, I have come up with two things that makes almost everyone stick to a company:
1. He/She should feel that they are taken care of.
2. He/She feel challenged.
As long as these are satisfied, an employee sticks to the company.
What did you and your friends come up with?
I am curious.
