When a volcano erupted in Iceland, it disrupted not only life in Iceland, but the entire EU territory around it. Within a couple of hours flight across Britain were grounded, and that further extended to the entire Europe in the following 24hrs. The air space was completely shut to the world…no flight leave or travel through this airspace.
As the News channels spread the word about disruptions lasting for another week -
The airline companies complained about losses of approx £130million a day
The railway & hotel industry encashed on the situation.
The insurance industry was shrugged off any claims, classifying Volcanic eruption as a Natural phenomenon, Act of God. And apparently the small print in ‘Terms & Conditions’ of an insurance claim specifies – ‘ NO refund against Act of God’.
And caught in the web of all these industries, were the People. People who couldn’t reach their destination in time. People who had to shell out loads of cash to books hotels for staying an extra night(s). People who called airports/railways/car companies to find alternative travel routes. People who endlessly argued with insurance agents about refunds. People whose life lat in uncertainty in this whole mess.
But reading about all this made me wonder – We have built all these facilities around us for our convenience, for our benefit, for our use. But all these facilities are deemed to betray us, with these endless clauses. Not one came out and offered a helping hand, not one walked an extra mile. So are they really worth it ?
